Heart of Uptown Preservation Apartments

Moderate Rehabilitation

IN PROGRESS

The Heart of Uptown Apartments Project (HUPA) comprises five buildings with 103 leased homes, two-thirds of them family-sized units, that have been owned and sponsored by Voice of the People in Uptown and partners for decades. LBBA is working with POAH and Voice of the People Uptown to renovate these properties and preserve affordable housing in Uptown.

Located at 847 W. Sunnyside, 900 W. Windsor, 927 W. Wilson, 4437 N. Clifton, and 4130 N. Kenmore, the buildings are strategically positioned within the Uptown community, with two included in the Sheridan Park and Buena Park neighborhood historic districts. Convenient access to bus and train transportation further supports residents' daily lives. The planned rehabilitation encompasses building systems upgrades, energy conservation measures, updated finishes, and accessibility improvements to meet the evolving needs of residents over time.

The original funding for the buildings received crucial support from the Wilson Yards Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District. Financing for the renovation draws on low-income housing tax credits, City financing, historic tax credits, and TIF funds — secured with the support of 46th Ward Alderwoman and former Voice tenant Angela Clay — reflecting the collaborative effort to preserve this vital affordable housing.
