3959 N Lincoln Permanent Supportive Housing

Adaptive Reuse + New Construction

IN PROGRESS

Originally constructed in 1925 as the Lincoln Trust & Savings Bank, this five-story landmark in the North Center neighborhood is being transformed into 64 units of permanent supportive housing for domestic violence survivors, with a focus on serving immigrant and migrant communities.

The adaptive reuse will preserve the building’s historic character while creating a modern haven of supportive housing with ground-floor retail space. A five-story addition will wrap around the south and east facades, connecting to form a central courtyard. The new construction matches the height of the existing structure and features brick veneer with composite and metal panel accents. To accommodate the housing program, the project utilizes the existing parking lot by providing an addition built overhead with a reduced number of parking spaces and a new residential entrance lobby facing Lincoln Ave.

The original banking hall remains the heart of the building, now serving as a community gathering space that connects to resident amenities and support services. Apna Ghar, a local nonprofit that provides services and outreach across communities to end gender violence, will have a counseling suite overlooking this central lounge.

The residential program consists of 14 one-bedroom, 36 two-bedroom, and 14 three-bedroom units distributed across the upper floors. This project is part of a larger development that includes a new mixed-use building with additional commercial space across the street.

The project is funded through the City of Chicago Department of Housing (DOH) and the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA).
