Legends South
Urban Design + Planning
Legends South is one of the City of Chicago’s most ambitious efforts to revitalize public housing that, once completed, will include 2,400 mixed income rental and affordable homeownership units. Under the Chicago Housing Authority’s “Plan for Transformation,” these phases reconnect the formerly isolated super block high-rise site to the street grid by adding new streets, scaling the blocks for more comfortable walking distances, and establishing a variety of public, semi-public, and private courtyard spaces.
The first phase of Legends South consists of 181 CHA, affordable, and market-rate rental residential units (Hansberry Square) and 73 home ownership residential units (Hansberry Homes) on a site of approximately 11.5 acres. The design team for this site was LBBA and Johnson and Lee Architects of Chicago.
The second phase of the Robert Taylor Hope VI Revitalization consists of 220 residential units and a community center on a site of approximately 15 acres. The site is located on the South Side of Chicago and is bounded by 43rd Street to the North, 45th Street to the South, State Street to the East and the Dan Ryan Expressway to the West. LBBA and Brook Architecture of Chicago were on the design team for this site.
Gwendolyn Place, the third phase of Legends South, is an infill scattered-site project. This phase was one of the most unique and challenging phases because it covers multiple properties in the neighborhood. The project’s 14 buildings, 71 rental units, and ground-floor commercial spaces are designed in a variety of architectural styles to blend with the larger historic Bronzeville neighborhood.
