PRAA Cultural Center

Adaptive Reuse Cultural Center

PHASE 1: COMPLETED IN 2012
PHASE 2: IN PROGRESS

The Puerto Rican Arts Alliance (PRAA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing Puerto Rican culture.

The PRAA Cultural Center is an adaptive reuse of the abandoned Elbridge Fire Station located on Chicago’s northwest side. The Center provides space for public meetings and exhibitions, offices, art and music educational workshops and public performances.

Renovations involved upgrading to energy-efficient HVAC systems, windows, and doors, as well as extensive repair of framing- all of which will perform above the ASHRAE baseline of 14%. Additional green initiatives include ample natural daylight throughout the space, drought-resistant landscaping, a green roof with an Energy Star roofing membrane, Energy Star interior lighting, and low VOC paints and finishes.

The second phase will be the expansion of the center into the two properties next door to the current building. This much-needed expansion has been a long time coming due to PRAA's success in programming. The new phase includes more gallery space, a revamped courtyard for year-round use, and a connecting hall to tie it all together.
