Dr. Maya Angelou Village
Permanent Supportive Housing
IN PROGRESS
This mixed-use, 45-unit development known as the Dr. Maya Angelou Village will offer a Permanent Supportive Housing option with a focus on at-risk young adults and their families.
The three-story building located in Detroit's Miller Grove neighborhood will have one, two, and three-bedroom units as well as a resource center with computer workstations, a community room, an outdoor patio and play space, and on‐site property management. Supportive services, provided by Alternatives For Girls (AFG) and Southwest Counseling Solutions, will be offered on-site in case management offices and a group therapy room. The development will also include a ground floor childcare center with outdoor play space accessible to both tenants and members of the general public.
Alternatives For Girls, a Detroit-based nonprofit organization that helps unhoused girls and young women, named the development after Maya Angelou because of her inspiring works about overcoming trauma as a girl and young woman.
This project is set to obtain the National Green Building Standard (NGBS).
