As Women’s History Month comes to an end, we’re taking the opportunity to highlight Maya Angelou, an author, poet, and civil rights activist whose words have inspired generations. One of her best-known writings, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” is a pivotal autobiography that explores her early life and experiences with racism and trauma.

Angelou went on to write numerous books, poems, and essays. Beyond her writing, Angelou was an activist who worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, among others. Angelou’s work continues to resonate with readers and activists today, so much so that a recent project of ours, Dr. Maya Angelou Village, was named in her honor.

We are working with the non-profit organizations, Alternatives for Girls and Full Circle Community on this 45-unit housing project that will provide affordable housing and permanent supportive housing in Detroit’s thriving Miller Grove neighborhood.
