Ribbon Cutting for Brookwood at Antioch Opening

Last Friday marked the grand opening of Brookwood at Antioch, a 66-unit mixed-income community in Kansas City, MO.

Two of our architects on the project, Jeff Bone and Andrew Arkell, were able to attend the ribbon cutting and meet all of the wonderful teams involved. The many speakers at the event talked about the Chaumiere neighborhood’s vibrant history, how this vision for affordable housing developed, and the lasting impact it will have on the community.

Once a dilapidated motel complex, the site has experienced an incredible transformation. The multi-building development is National Green Building Standard-certified and designed to be family-friendly with a variety of floor plans (some offering up to 5 bedrooms), green areas, and public spaces. In addition to the new townhouses and apartments, an approximately 4,350 SF community resource center and play lot are located on the site.

Thank you to the passionate teams across Clay County for making this project possible as well as our partners, Brinshore Development LLC, Straub Construction, Olsson, Leigh + O’Kane, Custom Engineering, and the Missouri Housing Development Commission.

Along with the moving speeches and a tour of the grounds, John Mischlich, a local historian and community member, was there to discuss the history of Clay County. Originally home to various Native American tribes, later a French settlement, and then, for nearly half a century, a burgeoning area with a popular amusement park known as the “The Atlantic City of the West“. A wall in Brookwood’s community center will eventually be designed to display this area’s unique past.
