Black History Month: Ruth Ellis

Today, we’re highlighting Ruth Ellis, a legendary activist known and loved for creating safe and supportive spaces for the LGBTQ+ community. Ellis’ home in Detroit became a source of support for those in need and a gathering spot where people could be themselves. She often bought books and food for young people, helped with college tuition, and eventually co-founded the Ruth Ellis Center (REC) in 1999. They recently opened their new community center where they can continue and expand their supportive services and housing for LGBTQ+ youth. We’re proud to have collaborated with such an inspiring organization to bring their building to life. Learn more about Ruth Ellis and the REC by visiting the sources below.
