Open Door Shelter, Chicago, IL
The adaptive reuse of a 7,300 sq. ft. Chicago 6-flat into a 16-bed transitional shelter for homeless teenagers provides a secure and supportive environment to encourage growth, stability, and self-sufficiency. Volunteers of all ages spend time in the shelter with the kids preparing meals, eating, listening and telling stories.
New colorfully stained Knothead bunk beds and armoire storage cabinets were built providing the residents semi-private spaces within the existing floor plan layout.
