DA+HC Wins National AIA/HUD Secretary’s Award

The American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) Housing Knowledge Community, in conjunction with the Office of the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), recognized four recipients of the 2016 AIA/HUD Secretary Awards. These awards demonstrate that design matters, and the recipient projects offer examples of important developments in the housing industry.
Dorchester Art + Housing Collaborative (DA+HC) has been awarded an AIA/HUD Secretary’s Award in the category of Creating Community Connection, which recognizes projects that incorporate housing within other community amenities for the purpose of either revitalization or planned growth. The project was initiated by the Rebuild Foundation, an organization run by Chicago artist Theaster Gates and Chicago-based Brinshore Development. Originally a 1980’s Chicago Housing Authority project, the Dante Harper housing project, the DA+HC is now a public/private/non-profit collaboration.
The project embodies a successful collaboration between private, public, and non-profit sectors committed to transforming the South Side neighborhood into an arts incubator. Through the reactivation of abandoned buildings and neighborhood landmarks, the project endeavors to incite a revitalization that is cultural-based, artist-led, and community-driven.
